Private Office vs Coworking

Both work. They just suit different businesses. Here is how to tell which one fits yours.

Coworking and a private office solve different problems. Neither is better in the abstract, but one of them is usually clearly better for a specific business. Here is an honest comparison of the tradeoffs.

When coworking is the right answer

Coworking genuinely wins when you are early, mobile, or working alone on something that does not require privacy. If you are in the office two days a week, do not take confidential calls, and want the lowest possible monthly number, a shared desk is hard to beat. It is also good for the social side, which people leaving a corporate job often miss more than they expect.

When a private office is worth the difference

The moment your work involves other people’s confidential information, the calculation changes. Accountants, lawyers, mortgage brokers, insurance advisors, therapists, recruiters and consultants all hit the same wall: you cannot take that call at a shared table.

The other tipping point is physical. If you need files, a second monitor, signage on a door, or somewhere a client can sit down opposite you, packing everything into a locker each evening stops being viable.

Signs you have outgrown coworking

The hybrid most people actually want

A lot of small firms want the privacy of their own room without paying for a boardroom they use twice a month. That is the arrangement in our suite: a private lockable office of your own, plus a shared 10-person boardroom included at no extra cost, plus a shared kitchen and a waiting area for clients.
